What are Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s)?

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are healthy types of fat the body needs in order to function properly. They are called "essential" because they cannot be made by the body, but rather must be obtained through the diet. These are a special type of "good fat", because they are required for the proper structure and function of every cell in the human body and are important for optimal health. There are three major classes of essential fatty acids: omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9. The omega-3’s and omega-6’s are essential because, unlike omega-9, the body cannot produce them on its own.

What do EPA & DHA stand for? Why is this important to note?

EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) - EFA’s may be referred to as polyunsaturated fatty acids, based on their chemistry. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are commonly found in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and tuna. EFA supplements usually supply several different essential fatty acids, including EPA & DHA. Depending on the particular source used, fish oils will range in the amount of EPA & DHA they provide. Quality fish oil supplements will often have 18% EPA & 12% DHA. These breakouts are important to note because experts specifically recommend 500-900mg per day of EPA and DHA, and currently, average consumption by Americans is less than 100mg per day.

Why are Essential Fatty Acids recommended for people with diabetes?

Studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may be helpful in treating a variety of conditions. The evidence is strongest for heart disease and problems that contribute to heart disease, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
